Four Years Ago
Winter sat at the dining room table at the request of her dad. She held her hands together on top of the table and leaned on her elbows. She stared at her fingers, allowing her mind to wander into numbness.
Steve sighed. “I know you hate it here. And for whatever reason, you hate me. I don’t know what I can do to fix this.”
Winter didn’t move.
“Will you please look at me?”
She cut her eyes to him, and then looked back down at her hands. “Can we just get the lecture over with?”
“I’m not going to lecture you.”
Winter rolled her eyes. “Why else would you call me out of my room to sit at the table?”
Steve sighed again. “It’s your birthday today, your sweet sixteenth. I was hoping that maybe a special present would help mend things between us.”
“You’re going to try to buy me off?”
“No. It’s not like that.” Steve ran his hand through his hair. “You may not believe me, but I do love you. And I know your mom would want this day to be special.”
“Dad, don’t…”
“No doubt she would have planned…”
“STOP IT!” She flattened her hands on the table and clenched her jaw. “It’s just another day, okay? I don’t want anything but to be left alone.”
Steve stared at her a moment. “Okay.” He slid a small box toward her. “Now that you’re sixteen and you’ve finished Driver’s Ed, we can go get your license this week.”
Winter grabbed the box with one hand and slid it in front of her. She pulled the ribbon and pried the box open. Inside was a key.
She narrowed her eyes at it. “What’s this for?”
“Your car.”
Winter looked up at him with wide eyes. “A car? Seriously?”
Steve smiled. “Seriously.”
Winter looked back down. “What’s the catch?”
“Why do you think there would be a catch?”
“Why wouldn’t there be?”
“Believe it or not, I’m just trying to do something good for you. Maybe you can give me a break and we can start putting things right between us.”
Winter flipped the key in her hands. “Where is it?”
“In the garage.”
Winter stood and walked through the kitchen to the garage door. Steve followed.
In the garage was a brand new light blue Mustang parked beside her dad’s work truck. The fluorescent lights shimmered from the perfectly waxed exterior.
“Blue?”
“Could you at least try to be a little grateful? It didn’t come with a spare, so I bought one. I’ll have to teach you how to change a flat.”
Winter walked toward the car and dragged her fingers over the hood. “Is it really mine?”
“Yes, it’s really yours.”
“Can I drive it?”
Steve shook his head. “Not until you get your license.”
“But I have a permit. I can drive with you in the car.”
Steve took a deep breath. “I want to go put flowers on your mom’s grave Christmas day. You can drive it then.”
“Forget it.” Winter flung the key at Steve’s feet and went back inside.
